Da Ra Bendre, who wrote as Ambikatanayadatta, was among the greatest Kannada poets of the twentieth century. He brought the spoken Dharwad idiom, folk rhythm and song into modern verse. He received the Jnanpith Award in 1973 for his collection Naaku Tanti.
