K. V. Puttappa, who wrote as Kuvempu, was among the greatest Kannada poets of the twentieth century. His epic Sri Ramayana Darshanam won him the Jnanpith Award in 1967. His call for a vishwa manava — a universal human beyond caste and creed — runs through all his verse.
